Hyperbolic Raises $30M From Lip-Bu Tan's Walden Catalyst to Trade GPU Capacity
Hyperbolic, a San Francisco GPU cloud and orchestration startup, raised an oversubscribed $30 million Series A-1 led by Walden Catalyst, the venture firm founded by Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and former Samsung president Young Sohn, according to the company’s October 27 press release. Business Insider reports the round brings Hyperbolic’s total funding to $50 million.
The numbers
- $30M Series A-1, led by Walden Catalyst, with Dell Technologies Capital, General Catalyst, Vista Equity Partners, Cambium Capital and Salience Capital participating.
- $50M raised to date, per Business Insider.
- 300+ GPU cloud providers in today’s market, each with different hardware, networking and software standards, by the company’s count.
- 250,000+ AI builders on the platform, including teams at Modal, Higgsfield, Daytona, HeyGen, Pika and RadixArk.
What the money buys
The round funds Forge, Hyperbolic’s control plane that turns mixed bare-metal GPU clusters into standardized capacity and runs provisioning, networking and operations across providers from one dashboard. It also pays for multi-cloud orchestration that places workloads, including inference, by cost, performance and availability, and shifts them as conditions change.
The market-making bet
The bigger pitch is what the release calls a Global Compute Grid: a platform where suppliers and buyers can buy, sell and resell eligible GPU capacity. Hyperbolic says it plans spot instances and dynamic pricing, market-making strategies to add liquidity, and tools to help customers hedge compute price risk. Founder and CEO Jasper Zhang was a market-making quant at Citadel Securities before starting the company. “We’re bringing orchestration and liquidity together so customers have more flexibility in how they use compute,” Zhang said.
Why Lip-Bu Tan’s name matters
Tan leads the round through Walden Catalyst while running Intel. “Adding more hardware is only part of the answer,” he said in the release, arguing the value of AI spending depends on how well capacity is put to work. Angel investors include executives from Citadel Securities, NYSE and Vista, plus GPU clouds WhiteFiber and Vector Core Compute.
What we are watching
Spot instances, dynamic pricing and the resale grid are all described as planned, not shipped. The test is whether Hyperbolic can launch them, and whether neoclouds with idle GPUs actually list capacity there. The release gives no valuation, revenue or utilization figures.
